Despite the new Marvel comics movie X-men Origins: Wolverine receiving something of a negative critical response (not forgetting a great deal of scorn on the part of the Wolverine fans), the new Wolverine video game seems like it could be the greatest comic book hero film tie-in for a ludicrously long time. Despite the movie juggling with established continuity big-time, the makers of the licensed X-men Origins: Wolverine movie video game have taken it upon themselves to get hold of the original source material and make something excellent out of the dire mess of a film. They’ve done a rather impressive job, too. The fruits of their labours are there for you all to play for yourself in the new Wolverine video game on the Playstation 3, Xbox and Wii.
A Wolverine video game has never really managed to recreate those unique characteristics that so many comic and graphic novel enthusiasts have adored for many years. However, the official new X-men Origins: Wolverine video game does seem to get things right, which is none too shabby seeing as the Wolverine movie itself seems to have been a huge screw-up. This could be a very rare occurrence indeed- a licensed game that is actually better than the film it is based on.
The first thing you’ll probably take on board is the awesome combat system this game offers. It does capture some of the gut-churning action that being the Wolverine character would allow you. His mutant healing factor adds another element to the game too, and it is great to see a mainstay of his comics and film incarnation done so well by the Wolverine video game developers. Logan’s attributes in this new Wolverine video game constantly heal as you get injured, but you’ll have to hide and recuperate if your energy gets too low.
With progressively more powerful enemies to fight throughout the game, it becomes an increasingly exciting experience the more you work at it. With great visuals and sound, it does dump you into the thick of battle, and with so many X-Men comic book characters appearing throughout this Wolverine video game, there is a great deal to keep hardcore fans happy. Another positive feature of the game-play is the ability to focus on certain aspects of Wolverine’s sharpened senses by using your control pad, letting you spot bad guys, escape routes and more that you possibly otherwise miss.
As an overall game, the X-Men Origins: Wolverine video game is a resounding success, offering you all the thrills of the Wolverine film with added characteristics that the feature film lacks. With crisp, beautiful graphics and powerful sound design, the game really gets you into the character and his berserker rage, and is a welcome addition to the roster of Marvel movies tie-in games. The new Wolverine video game is better than the movie, Bub.
