Alchemy is a very useful crafting profession in WoW. There are plenty of players out there who chose to skillup Alchemy fast because of its benefits. Alchemy and Herbalism

Alchemy and Herbalism are a perfect match. Alchemy simply needs herbs to progress and create and therefore most Alchemists take Herbalism as their second profession.

Alchemy Tools

In order to create flasks, pots and elixirs an Alchemist needs herbs and vials. These vials can be purchased at any Alchemy Supply vendor in any capital city and in many other cities. Alchemists with a high level skill can also perform useful transmutations with metals and elemental materials.

A specific requirement for any transmute is a Philosopher’s Stone. This is a special stone created with Alchemy and an Alchemist needs to keep it in his inventory at all times so he would be able to transmute. With specific transmutes, the Philosopher’s Stone will have a certain cooldown, which means that an Alchemist cannot make another similar transmutation until the cooldown runs off.

Alchemy Specials

On higher levels a skilled Alchemist is able to create a unique trinket for himself. There are different variations of this trinket depending on one’s spec. For healers and dps casters there is Mercurial Alchemist Stone, for melee dps there is Mighty Alchemist’s Stone and for tanks there is Indestructible Alchemist’s Stone. When equipped, any of these trinkets has the power to increase the overall effect of hp and mana pots (effect increased by 40%). Since WOTLK expansion WoW players are only able to use one potion per fight and therefore this trinket comes very useful, especially for mana consumers.

Flasks also last longer, which is another great feature of Alchemy. When one consumes a flask its duration will be 1h. However, for Alchemists the flask effect will last for 2 hours! For hard core PVE players and raiders this will prove to be very practical.

Specialization

When he reaches the higher levels in Alchemy, an Alchemist will need to choose one of the three specializations. These specs are Potion master, Elixir master and Transmute master. Each of these specs can occasionally create an extra item of their trade.

Discoveries

While doing any of the transmutations, an Alchemist will be able to discover new transmutes. New discoveries are also available with pots and elixirs. Since Wrath of the Lich King expansion Alchemists are able to perform a Northrend Alchemy Research to achieve new recipe discoveries. Their research can be performed after each cooldown which lasts for 3 days. To start a research an Alchemist will require Adder’s Tongue, Goldclover and Talandra’s Rose. He will also need Enchanted Vials (4) that can be purchased at any Alchemy Supply vendor in Northrend as well as with some General Goods traders.

Difference between Flasks and Elixirs

Flasks and elixirs once consumed have a certain effect that stays during a certain period. There are 2 specific types of elixirs - Battle elixirs and Guardian elixirs. Both types of elixir last for an hour but their effect stops if a player dies in battle. Flasks also last for one hour but their effect will continue even after the player’s death.
